Pat Hedman was an outstanding point guard for the Point Loma Nazarene College men’s basketball team from 1978-80. He led the Crusaders to three consecutive conference championships and three second-place finishes in the NAIA District Three playoffs. His smart play and pinpoint passing helped define the point guard position for the Crusaders players and fans. He was the team’s Most Valuable Player for the Crusaders in 1980. Hedman was also a two-time All-Conference selection, a two-time All-District Selection and a National Christian College Athletic Association All-American.

Hedman holds the single season record for assists with 368 and incredibly averaged over 10 assists per game in his junior and senior years. He holds the career record of 856 assists accomplished in just three years. He also holds the single game assists record with 21 which he tied once. In fact, he has the top six games in assists in the record book at 21, 21, 20, 17 16 ad 16 and then picks up again for a tie at eighth with two more games of 14. He was always the best in close games when he would make the key assists, hit the key basket, make the crucial steal or hit the clutch free throw to keep the team in contention.

His outstanding play and court leadership during his three years made him the finest point guard of the university’s San Diego era. During those three years, the team won 67 games.

Hedman was respected by his teammates, opposing players and coaches for his leadership and mental toughness. He was one of the few players who could beat you with a pass. Hedman majored in the little unseen things that are so necessary for a winning program. Though a tremendous amount of attention is given to Hedman’s court savvy and passing ability, he was an offensive presence himself. He scored 504 points during those three years so his defensive man couldn’t just pull off and try to block passing lanes.

After school, Hedman married his wife Janice and the couple settled in Sacramento where Hedman worked for the Angelo Electric Company. They have two children, Austin and Baily.

The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Hedman by Bob Brower.
