Hall of Fame
Dr. Leon Kugler has been an important member of the Point Loma staff for almost 30 years. After graduating from Pasadena College in 1972, Kugler came back to the university in 1978. Since then, Kugler has committed himself to the university as a professor, coach and director of the athletic training program. Most importantly, he has always represented Point Loma as a model Christian.
Under his leadership, the athletic training center has evolved from a tiny one-room space to the state-of-the art facility it is today, where athletes on the mend work with some of the finest student athletic trainers in the country.
As a faculty member and scholar in a university dedicated to the principles of Christ, Kugler’s truest impact comes from the countless number of students and athletes he has inspired. In his many roles, no other person comes into contact with more people on a day-to-day basis than Kugler. Soccer coaches Tim Hall and Mark Halpert are just two examples of people that Kugler has guided through their development as Christians, students, athletes and coaches at Point Loma.
“Leon is a man of God and cares about the whole person,” said Mike Farrand, a former player. “As a young student/athlete, he instilled in me what a Christian man should be like. The examples of his life in working daily with me and the group of young men that made up our soccer teams changed all of our lives.”
The award for Meritorious Service was presented to Kugler by Bob Brower.
