For 25 years Sea Lion student-athletes have been receiving help and support from Bill Young. This man has assisted Point Loma Athletics in many roles, most of which no one else wanted to do. Young drove buses, helped coaches, organized events and did countless number of other jobs which have helped PLNU Athletics reached the level that it has today.

Young’s connection with the university began many years ago as an undergraduate student. After taking a hiatus after high school, Young came to Pasadena, already married to his wife Rose Marie, determined to earn a degree. He did not have a scholarship or even much money in the bank, but he was determined to graduate. He worked full-time at the Market Basket while taking 16 units. He would go on to graduate from Pasadena College in 1956 with an undergraduate degree in Religion.

Young then took up the calling of ministry. He worked as a pastor for 12 years and then another 12 for the Nazarene church in Kansas City at the Home Missions Department. Young then got the chance to return to Point Loma and jumped on the opportunity. He became the Director of Enrollment Services and worked for 20 years until retiring in 1997. He also earned a graduate degree in Education from PLNU in 1982.

The love of PLNU sports for Young goes back to his days as a student at Pasadena College. He remembers watching the ‘Firehouse 5’ and still bleeds Green & Gold to this day. He started working with coach Jerry Arvin and the Point Loma track & field teams in 1999, and has been an honorary member of the team ever since. Young also recalls making the trips to Decatur, Alabama with the Sea Lions softball team as one of his standout moments.

Young and his wife Rose Marie (who was unable to attend today because of Parkinson’s) recently celebrated this 62nd wedding anniversary. The couple has four children; Mike (60), Doug (58), Tim (55) and Cindy (54), all of which are in attendance today.

Young was a standout athlete at Scottsdale High School in Arizona. He ran cross country and track. He ran the mile in track and help set the school record in the mile relay. He was also on the basketball team.
