Marilyn Martin came to Point Loma during the developmental stages of a women’s running program. It didn’t take long for her impact to be noticed. The level achieved in 1988, when the women won their first ever District Track and Field Championship can be traced in part to the dynamic presence and unfailing loyalty of Martin.
In the words of her coach, Marilyn’s “persona” combined traits of intellect, dedication and enthusiasm with a rare work ethic that helped her to become the top female distance runner in the history of the school and District Three. In 1982, she capped a competitive career with a fifth-place finish at the NAIA National 1500m race to gain All-American honors.
Point Loma always hopes that the characteristics which propel athletes to high performance will be transferred into life in the real world. Martin has continued to show her excellence as a biology teacher in San Diego and has been recognized as one of the primary leaders in establishment of the Academic Olympics
The award for Outstanding Achievement by an Athlete was presented to Martin by Sam Mallicoat.
